Albion Volunteers Made Food Distribution Possible
Take a group of dedicated volunteers, add sponsors and mix in area residents in need and Food Distributions happen in Albion.
A simple recipe for success? Not really. It takes coordination and volunteers who show up regularly for this successful on-going food pick-up event to happen during the COVID pandemic. According to Leslee Fritz, pastor of the Albion First United Methodist Church, the team of volunteers are led by super-volunteer Carol Smith.
Carol moved to Albion several years ago with her husband. Al, and plunged immediately into volunteer life in the community. In addition to she and Al being at all the food distributions Carol is also involved in Citizens to Beautify Albion, Friends of Albion’s Animals, the American Legion and Albion Community Gardens.
Asked why she volunteers Carol said she was “raised to give back to your community.”
“I love the people of Albion,” Carol said. “I hate to see them in need and it is right thing to do to help them in any way I can.”
Carol said she has a group of dedicated volunteers who give back to the community at each food distribution. She said Pastor Leslee, Felicia Coates, Veronica Cordova, Lenn Reid, Susan Obert, Dawn Martin, Sue Robinson, Michael Collins and Terry and Dana Anderla are the backbone of the volunteers who make the fresh food distributions happen.
Carol stated that Veronica often brings her niece Nyla Cordova and Lenn brings her granddaughter Alexis Alexander Coney demonstrating multi-generational volunteerism.
Albion-Homer United Way, the Methodist Church, Oaklawn Hospital and Albion Community Foundation sponsor food distributions. Winter distributions are planned for the 2nd Thursday and the 3rd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at the Albion Food Hub. In addition to drive-up distributions there are volunteers who also bring food boxes to Albion and Homer senior citizens.
“I’ll continue to help with distributing food, “Carol said, “because there is a real need out there. I know that volunteerism is one of the reasons I love this town. People help each other.”
