Marc Newman Named to Albion-Homer United Way Board

Albion-Homer United Way recently added Marc Newman as a new board member for the local philanthropic organization.

Newman is the Albion College vice president for advancement and brings over 20 years of fundraising experience to the local board.

“We are pleased to have Marc demonstrate his commitment to furthering the goals of the Albion-Homer United Way by joining our board, ” stated Marcia Starkey AHUW executive director. “He brings a wealth of experience with United Way and a belief in the mission of the organization.”

In joining the local board Newman stated “ I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with the United Way in every city we’ve lived in including serving on the campaign committee the last two years.” He continued, “ I look forward to working with the United Way to support the Albion and Homer communities for years to come.”

Newman came to Albion in 2021 from Grambling State University in Grambling, LA where he served as vice president of research and economic development. He has also held positions at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC and previously been in several  roles with the United Negro College Fund in Wisconsin, North Carolina and Virginia.

He has earned a bachelor’s degree, two masters and is currently pursuing a doctorate at Grambling State University. Newman is affiliated with the Association of Fundraising Professionals, 100 Black Men of America, Blacks in Development and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He also served on the Lincoln Parish Chamber of Commerce, board chair of the Lincoln Parish CVB and HBCAgrow.

Newman and Margorie, his wife of 25 years, are the parents of three children, Talia, Marc and Miles. In his spare time he enjoys golfing, coaching youth sports and working on home improvement projects.

Newman joins other board members Carolyn Amos, Donisha Brewer, Chris Burdette, Robert Hawkins, Ryan Hopkins, Art Kale, Isabell Nazar, Gary Tompkins, Eddie Williams and Shane Williamson in reviewing grants requested by area non-profit agencies.

In addition Newman is promoting the ongoing United Way fundraising efforts at Albion College.

According to Starkey there are several good reasons to donate to the local United Way including that donations fund Albion and Homer specific programs and funding decisions are made by a local board. Donor lists are never shared with other agencies and payroll deductions make donating easier. Donations can be mailed at any time to AHUW P.O. Box 55, Albion, MI 49224, made on-line at www.albionhomeruw.org or by contacting Starkey at 517-499-2563.
